How It Works

The calculator converts butter between six units using the standard US stick as the base: 1 stick = 1/2 cup = 8 tablespoons = 113.4 grams = 4 ounces. Enter any amount in any unit and every other unit updates automatically.

This is useful when a recipe uses sticks but your kitchen scale measures grams, or when converting a European recipe that lists butter in grams to US measurements. Butter density is consistent (about 911 g/L), so weight-to-volume conversions are reliable.

FAQ

How many sticks of butter in a cup?

2 sticks = 1 cup. Each US butter stick is 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons, 113g, 4 oz). A standard butter box from the store contains 4 sticks, which equals 2 cups or 1 pound.

How many grams in a stick of butter?

113.4 grams. Most recipes round this to 113g. If a European recipe calls for 100g of butter, that is slightly less than 1 stick — about 7 tablespoons.

Is European butter the same size as US butter?

No. European butter is typically sold in 250g blocks (about 2.2 US sticks) rather than 113g sticks. European butter also has higher butterfat content (82% vs 80% in US butter), which affects baking results — pastries will be flakier, cookies will spread more.

Can I measure butter without a scale?

Yes. US butter sticks have tablespoon markings printed on the wrapper. Each line = 1 tablespoon (14g). To measure without a stick, pack softened butter into a measuring cup and level it off — 1/2 cup = 1 stick.
